The best time to visit Manali depends on what you want. For snow you can stand in, go between late December and mid-March. For pleasant sightseeing and open high passes, go between April and June. For green valleys, lowest prices and fewest people, go in September and October. July and August bring monsoon landslide risk and are the one window we tell people to avoid.
Manali works all year, but not for the same reasons. Winter (late December to mid-March) is the snow season. Spring and early summer (April to June) is the sightseeing season, when Rohtang reopens and every road is drivable. Monsoon (July to August) is the one to avoid. Autumn (September to November) is the quiet, cheap, clear-sky season that experienced travellers keep to themselves.
This is when most people from South and West India come, and they come for one thing. Manali town itself sits at 2,050 m and gets intermittent snow; the reliable snow is above it, at Solang (2,560 m) and through the Atal Tunnel at Sissu (3,100 m). Daytime temperatures in town run roughly 0°C to 10°C, dropping below freezing at night. Rohtang Pass is closed. Hotels are at peak rates over Christmas, New Year and mid-January.
Snow melts off the valley floor, Rohtang Pass typically reopens somewhere in May, and the Manali–Spiti route over Kunzum La opens around June. Daytime temperatures sit between 15°C and 25°C. This is the peak family holiday season, which means the highest volume of tourists and the worst Solang traffic of the year. You will still find snow — you just have to drive higher for it.
The one window we actively discourage. Himachal's monsoon brings landslides and road closures on the Mandi–Kullu stretch, and flight cancellations at Bhuntar. Rates are at their lowest for a reason. If you must travel then, build two spare days into your plan and do not book a non-refundable return flight for the morning after you leave the valley.
Our own favourite. The monsoon clears, the air is the sharpest it gets all year, apple harvest is on, and prices drop well below the winter and summer peaks. Rohtang stays open until roughly early November. October nights get cold quickly, so pack for winter even though the days feel mild.
Couples and honeymooners get the best value in September to November and again in February, when it is still snowy but the December–January crowd has gone. Families with young children do best in April to June, when the cold is manageable and the roads are open. Friend groups chasing snow should target mid-January to late February, the deepest and most reliable part of the winter.

January is the deepest and most reliable snow month, with February close behind. Late December is popular but early-season snow is less certain than the New Year crowd assumes.
Yes, but for different reasons. Summer is when Rohtang Pass, the Spiti route and the high treks are open, and when the valley is at its greenest. If you specifically want to touch snow, you will need to go to Rohtang or above Solang.
July and August, because of the monsoon, followed by September. September gives you the low rates without the landslide risk, which makes it the best-value month of the year.
