Valley & snow-sports meadow · 2,560 m
Solang Valley is the meadow between Manali and Rohtang where most first-time visitors touch snow. At 2,560 m it sits high enough to hold winter snow for months and low enough to reach on a normal car in under an hour.
Solang is less a village than a wide grassy shoulder of the Beas valley, hemmed by the Dhauladhar on one side and the run-up to Rohtang on the other. In summer it is a green bowl used for paragliding, zorbing and ATV rides. From late December the whole floor goes white and the same ground becomes Manali's beginner ski slope, with the ropeway carrying people up towards Mount Patalsu for the view.
It is also the most commercially dense place in the valley. Boot and jacket rental, sledges, snow tubes and photo touts all cluster at the entrance. Prices are negotiable and quality varies, which is exactly where a local operator saves you money and argument.
Solang Valley sits at 2,560 m. Shaded months below are when it reliably holds snow.

Solang reliably holds snow from late December to mid-March. In April and May you will usually find patches near the ropeway and the upper slopes but not on the valley floor. From June to October the valley is green.
No. Solang needs no permit. The permit requirement starts above Gulaba on the road to Rohtang Pass.
