Highway tunnel & Lahaul village · 3,100 m
The Atal Tunnel runs 9.02 km under the Rohtang ridge and connects Manali to the Lahaul valley in about ten minutes. It has quietly become the single most important thing to happen to Manali winter tourism, because it made Lahaul reachable in the months when Rohtang Pass is shut.
Before the tunnel opened in October 2020, Lahaul was cut off from Manali for roughly six months a year. Now you drive under the mountain and come out at the north portal into a completely different landscape — drier, starker, more Tibetan than Himachali.
Sissu is the first proper village on the far side, sitting beside the Chandra river with a waterfall dropping off the cliff behind it and a small frozen lake in winter. For most travellers this is where the trip's best photographs happen: the Manali side can be slushy and crowded while Sissu is still clean, deep snow.
Atal Tunnel & Sissu sits at 3,100 m. Shaded months below are when it reliably holds snow.

9.02 km. It runs beneath the Rohtang ridge and takes about ten minutes to drive, cutting roughly 46 km off the old Manali–Lahaul road.
No permit is needed for the tunnel or for Sissu and Keylong. Permits apply to Rohtang Pass, which is a different, higher road.
Yes, and that is the point of the tunnel. Sissu stays reachable through most of the winter, which is why it has replaced Rohtang as the standard winter snow trip.
