Rohtang Pass

Rohtang is a seasonal pass. Snow closes it from around November to May, and the reopening date shifts every year with the Border Roads Organisation's clearing work. Even in season, a daily cap on vehicles is enforced under National Green Tribunal orders, and permits must be obtained in advance online.

Since the Atal Tunnel opened, Rohtang has changed role. It is no longer the way to Lahaul — it is a destination in its own right, visited for the pass, the snow fields on top and the view down both sides. Most winter travellers now go to Sissu instead and treat Rohtang as a summer add-on.

What's actually there

• The pass summit at 3,978 m with views into both the Kullu and Lahaul valleys
• Snow on the ground even in June, when the rest of the valley is green
• Marhi, the tea-stall halt on the climb, where most vehicles stop
• Rani Nallah and the switchbacks — the classic Himalayan road photograph

Local notes

• Permits are issued online with a daily cap and must be arranged in advance. Same-day walk-up permits are not reliable.
• Tuesdays are typically a maintenance closure day. Check before planning around it.
• Altitude sickness is real at 3,978 m. Do not schedule Rohtang for the morning after you arrive in Manali.
• If Rohtang is closed or the quota is full, the Atal Tunnel and Sissu are the standard substitute and often have better snow anyway.
