Manali has no railway station and no reliable airport of its own. Almost everyone arrives by road from Delhi (535 km, 12–14 hours by overnight Volvo) or Chandigarh (310 km, 7–8 hours). Bhuntar airport, 50 km away, has limited weather-dependent flights. From South and West India, the standard route is a flight to Delhi or Chandigarh followed by the road leg.
This surprises people every season. The nearest broad-gauge railheads are Chandigarh and Ambala, both roughly 300 to 350 km short. Joginder Nagar is closer on the narrow-gauge line but poorly connected. Every Manali trip ends with a road leg, and the only question is how long you want that leg to be.
535 km via Chandigarh, Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu. Volvo semi-sleepers leave Delhi between 5:30 PM and 9:00 PM from Majnu Ka Tila, Kashmere Gate ISBT and RK Ashram Marg, arriving Manali between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. This overnight leg is bundled into most of our packages, which is why our prices are quoted from Delhi.
310 km, 7 to 8 hours, on NH205 through Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi and Kullu. If you can fly into Chandigarh, this is the least tiring way in: leave after breakfast, arrive in daylight, and keep your afternoon.
Bhuntar (KUU) is 50 km from Manali and handles small ATR aircraft from Delhi and Chandigarh. The runway sits in a narrow valley, so cancellations are frequent in winter fog and monsoon cloud. Fly into Bhuntar only if you have a bus or cab fallback ready.
From Hyderabad, Bangalore or Chennai, fly to Delhi (2 to 3 hours) and join the evening Volvo the same day. Land by 4:00 PM to make the bus comfortably. Direct flights to Chandigarh from Hyderabad and Bangalore are an alternative that shortens the road leg to eight hours.
Delhi flights run all day from all three. Ahmedabad also has a genuinely usable overnight train to Delhi at 13 to 16 hours. Mumbai and Ahmedabad have direct or one-stop Chandigarh options worth pricing if you would rather avoid the overnight bus.

No. The nearest is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali Airport, code KUU), about 50 km away, served by small aircraft with a high weather-cancellation rate.
12 to 14 hours for the 535 km. Overnight departures leave in the evening and arrive mid-morning.
Chandigarh and Ambala are the practical railheads, roughly 310 km and 350 km away respectively. There is no rail line into the Kullu valley.
