The castle is built in alternating courses of stone and deodar beam, a technique that lets the structure flex in earthquakes rather than crack. Part of it operates as a heritage hotel and part is open to visitors, including a courtyard, the Jagti Patt shrine and a small museum.
A short climb above the village is the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery, the house where the Russian painter lived from 1928 until his death in 1947. His Himalayan canvases hang in the rooms he painted them in, which is a rarer thing than the entry fee suggests.

Local notes
- Take the left-bank road up and the highway back — it is slower but far prettier.
- The Roerich gallery closes on Mondays. Check before you build a day around it.
- Pair Naggar with rafting at Pirdi; they are on the same stretch of the valley.
- The castle cafe terrace is a good lunch stop, and the view is the best part of it.

Naggar Castle & Roerich Gallery — common questions
How old is Naggar Castle?
It dates to around 1460 and served as the seat of the Kullu rulers. Naggar was the kingdom's capital for roughly 1,400 years before the seat moved to Kullu.
Is Naggar worth a stop on a 3-day trip?
Yes, on the Kullu day. It adds about an hour and it is the only place on the standard circuit with real history you can walk through.
